In 2022, Refugee Week took place between the 20th-26th June 2022. For the first time in 3 years we were able to celebrate this week in person and after such a difficult few years, it felt so important to do so.
Celebrating the Refugee World Cup
As is MRSN’s tradition we hosted the Refugee World Cup 2022 Football Tournament, as part of the Refugee Week celebration on the following days:
Male football competition: Saturday 25th June 2022 between 9:45 and 5pm
Female football competition: Sunday 26th June 2022 between 9:45 and 5pm (for female teams)
Location: Whalley Range Sport Centre, 11-18 Wilbraham Road, M16 8GW
All refugee communities and local teams from across Greater Manchester were welcome. The tournament was 8-a-side and teams could register a maximum of 10 players.
This year the Refugee World Cup paid tribute to Anthony Kollie to remember his contribution to the Refugee World Cup and his love and passion for the tournament. Anthony put so much of his time and effort into making the tournament a great success before he sadly passed away from COVID 19. We send our condolences to his family and hope this event will honor his memory.
A trophy and medals in Anthony’s memory was awarded to the winning team of the tournament.
The tournament was organised by Manchester Refugee Support Network in partnership with Manchester FA, Red Cross, Salford City Council and Manchester City Council.
